Bundesliga: BVB wins spectacle against Augsburg

Status: 01/22/2023 5:41 p.m

In the Bundesliga debut of striker Sébastien Haller for Borussia Dortmund, BVB beat the uncomfortable FC Augsburg. Borussia gave up the wild game three times in between.

On Sunday (01/22/2023) Borussia Dortmund finally won 4: 3 (2: 2). Attacker Haller, who has recovered from cancer, made his league debut for BVB, but the game was decided by jokers Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (75′) and Giovanni Reyna (78′). The other Dortmund goals went to Jude Bellingham (30′) and Nico Schlotterbeck (42′). Augsburg equalized three times through Arne Maier (40th), Ermedin Demirovic (45th + 1) and David Colina (77th).

Newly formed BVB controls Augsburg first

At Dortmund, the new right-back Julian Ryerson was in the starting XI. Front started after his contract extension Youssoufa Moukoko. There was a change at BVB, who played in 4-1-4-1. Previously, Dortmund had mostly acted in the 4-2-3-1. At Augsburg, the winter additions Arne Engels and Dion Beljo, who replaced striker Florian Niederlechner (Hertha BSC), who had migrated, were in the starting line-up.

It was an intense start. Ruben Vargas had to be substituted after a foul by Mats Hummels, winter signing Irvin Cardona came (12th). After a standard, Demirovic hit the crossbar (13th). But little went out of the game for the guests.

It was different at BVB, who often played the man-oriented FCA cover apart handsomely. Newcomer Ryerson also showed offensive drive. The ex-Unioner had often acted outside in a chain of five in Berlin.

Bellingham dances, Schlotterbeck dreams – and then scores

One in particular stood out at BVB: Bellingham, who used his more offensive role in the center in front of six Salih Özcan. He was strong in tackles, distributed the balls wisely and was safe as usual in dribbling. And at the half-hour mark, 19-year-old Engels wobbled before his shot hit the goal.

But after FCA’s first proper offensive action, the ball was suddenly in the BVB net. Schlotterbeck made a mistake in the defensive line after a pass from goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Beljo stole the ball from him and hung up for Maier.

Augsburg efficiency: Demirovic duped Dortmund

The German national defender made up for his mistake only a little later. Apparently, BVB had also worked on the problem of standards during the winter preparations: Julian Brandt’s free kick was used by Schlotterbeck to lead again.

But like several times this season, Augsburg was very efficient in Dortmund despite being inferior in terms of play. Engels sent on Demirovic, who held his own well against Hummels and leveled the scoreboard again – with FCA’s fourth shot on goal. Dortmund had already given up 16.

Haller celebrates his debut, FCA the third equalizer

After the restart, the hosts’ game lost momentum. Augsburg didn’t allow much and also fired the first three shots on goal after the break. BVB trainer Edin Terzic then decided on an impulse and brought it striker Sébastien Haller, who has recovered from cancer, who was loudly celebrated by the fans on his league debut for Dortmund (62nd). Moukoko had to give way after an unconvincing performance.

But two other BVB jokers played their way into the limelight: First Bynoe-Gittens flicked the ball into the far corner to make it 3-2, and Reyna also scored a dream goal. Just a minute earlier, Augsburg’s Colina had scored the third equalizer of the day. Demirovic almost scored a fourth time to equalize, but missed the last big FCA chance (89′).
