Bundesliga: BVB defeats Stuttgart and approaches Munich

Status: November 20, 2021 5:41 pm

Borussia Dortmund took advantage of Bayern Munich’s unexpected mistake. Coach Marco Rose’s team defeated the weakened VfB Stuttgart 2-1 (0-0) and reduced the gap to the leaders to one point. Munich had surprisingly lost at FC Augsburg on Friday (1: 2).

Donyell Malen (56th) and Marco Reus (85th) scored the goals for Dortmund. BVB celebrated a successful dress rehearsal for the “final” in the Champions League next Wednesday at Sporting Lisbon (11/24/21, 9:00 p.m., live ticker at sportschau.de). After the fifth league game in a row without a win, the guests’ concerns are growing, and the interim equalization by Roberto Massimo did not change anything (63rd).

More relaxed personnel situation at BVB

With the hosts, the personnel situation had relaxed somewhat. Raphael Guerreiro immediately moved into the starting line-up, Emre Can and Mahmoud Dahoud at least took their places on the bench again. From there they saw a game-defining BVB. In a powerful opening phase, captain Marco Reus just missed the lead with his free kick (7th). Six minutes later, Malen headed wide from a good position after a cross from the agile Julian Brandt. It was to remain the Dortmund’s last dangerous action for a long time.

BVB had control of the game in front of 57,900 spectators, but without Erling Haaland the target player was missing. So the Dortmunders sometimes combined nicely, but the last pass did not arrive. The VfB defense initially did not face any major problems with the flanks in the penalty area.

Stuttgart with the greatest chance in half one

The Swabians became more courageous in the game and had the greatest opportunity to take the lead in the first half. Tanguy Coulibaly failed in the BVB goal because of his strongly reacting former teammate Gregor Kobel. The favorite also had a hard time at the beginning of the second round. The Dortmund game was too imprecise, too unimaginative. Stuttgart continued to defend attentively and tried to put pinpricks.

The lead through the first goal of the season of the 30 million new signing Malen was a surprise. Hiroki Ito faked the Dutchman’s shot untenable for his goalkeeper Florian Müller.

BVB not sovereign despite leadership

But BVB’s game didn’t get any better even with the lead in the back. Manuel Akanji lost the ball to Philipp Förster. Atakan Karazor landed the ball at Massimo, who let Mats Hummels out and kept his nerve in front of Kobel. Akanji almost made up for his mistake.

But Müller directed his long-range shot to the crossbar (67th). The 2-1 came after a corner from Stuttgart and a lightning-fast counterattack.

13th matchday: BVB in Wolfsburg, VfB against Mainz

BVB has to play at VfL Wolfsburg on the 13th matchday (11/27/21, 3:30 p.m.), Stuttgart opens the matchday on Friday against Mainz 05 (11/26/21, 8:30 p.m.).
