FC Bayern Munich have won their seventh competitive game in a row at Greuther Fürth. Despite the success, Robert Lewandowski missed a new Bundesliga record.
A week after the 7-0 victory against VfL Bochum, FC Bayern Munich also scored an undisputed victory against the second Bundesliga promoted team. The 3-1 victory was much more competitive than the triumph on the previous day.
Individual class from Müller and Kimmich is crucial
Driven by the 9,000 spectators, the people of Fürth bravely started the game. After an offensive action, however, they were punished for their urge to move forward. Alphonso Davies prevailed over the left side and his deflected cross landed in front of the foot of Thomas Müller, who gave Bayern the lead (10th). It was the second goal of the season for the national player.
Fürth kept up well with the record champions, but the individual class always prevailed in the decisive scenes. Like in the 31st minute, when Joshua Kimmich scored the 2-0 for Bayern from 18 meters with a low shot.
Their striker Robert Lewandowski acted largely inconspicuously in the first half, narrowly failed on his only opportunity in the 40th minute and hit the crossbar after a Kimmich corner with the hoe. The Pole was only centimeters short of a Bundesliga record in this action. With one goal, Lewandowski would have set Gerd Müller’s record, the only player to have scored in 16 games in a row.
Pavard sees red, but Bayern stays cool
Shortly before the break, the leaders felt a glimmer of hope. Paul Seguin was only centimeters away from a corner to equalize (45th), but at the beginning of the second half the newly promoted team saw his chance. Benjamin Pavard saw the red card (50th) after an overly tough entry against ex-Munich Julian Green – Fürth over 40 minutes in excess.
However, it was not dangerous for Bayern. Fürth tried hard, but had no chance of scoring – and then hit his own goal. Sebastian Griesbeck made an own goal to make it 3-0 for Munich after 68 minutes. But there was still a sense of achievement for the hosts: Cedric Itten (88th) scored the honorary goal from Fürth shortly before the end.
Lewandowski missed the record
The team of coach Julian Nagelsmann celebrated the eighth competitive game victory in a row, but there was still one disappointed: Lewandowski did not score for the first time since February 5, 2021 – and thus missed the Müller record.
the SpVgg Greuther Fürth will guest next Friday (October 1st, 2021, 8.30 p.m.) at 1. FC Köln. The FC Bayern Munich has Eintracht Frankfurt as a guest two days later on Sunday (5.30 p.m.).
