It remains unclear whether Jérôme Boateng will play for FC Bayern again. A decision should be made in the afternoon.

The long-time national player Jérôme Boateng can still hope for a comeback at FC Bayern Munich. “We will decide today, but only this afternoon,” said coach Thomas Tuchel.

“He behaved well, trained well. We tested. We will clarify that with everyone involved this afternoon and then announce it,” emphasized the coach before the home game against SC Freiburg on Sunday (5.30 p.m./DAZN).

Various media had previously reported that there would be no comeback for the defender at Munich. Accordingly, the 2014 world champion will not receive a new contract with the German series champion. Tuchel denied this several times. “We will decide together. This decision doesn’t just have a sporting component,” said the 50-year-old.

The defender had already played at FC Bayern from 2011 to 2021. Most recently, Boateng, who did not receive a new contract at Olympique Lyon after two years, was without a club. That’s why he could also be signed outside the transfer window.

Munich’s calculations are influenced by the health situation of the three central defenders. Boateng trained with FC Bayern for the first time on Sunday. The defender was also in action on Säbener Straße on the following days.

Criticism of Boateng

Recently, however, the public focus has been less on the athlete and more on the private citizen Boateng. He is facing a new criminal trial in Bavaria because he is accused of attacking his then partner and mother of his children while on vacation in the summer of 2018. That’s why the footballer was sentenced in the second instance last year to a fine of 1.2 million euros for bodily harm and insult – but the Bavarian Higher Regional Court recently overturned this judgment and returned the case to the Munich I Regional Court. The case is therefore being reopened . Boateng complained about an unfair trial and a prior conviction.
