An era ends at Werder Bremen in the summer. The managing director leaves the ship.

Managing Director Frank Baumann will not extend his contract with Werder Bremen, which expires at the end of the season. The Bundesliga soccer team announced this on Wednesday.

“The decision was not easy for me because Werder has been much more than an employer for me for many years,” said Baumann (48). “But after eight years in management, I consider the decision to be the right and important one, both for me personally and for the club.”

Came to the Weser in 1999

Baumann came to the Weser as a player from Nuremberg in 1999 and, as captain of the Green-Whites, became German champion and twice DFB Cup winner. After his career as a professional, Baumann Werder remained as an official and has been responsible for the fortunes of the traditional club as managing director since the summer of 2016. During his term in office, the Bundesliga relegation occurred in 2021, for which many fans blamed Baumann. Nevertheless, he remained in office and ensured that Bremen achieved promotion again after just one year.

It is not yet clear who will succeed Baumann. The hottest candidate is Clemens Fritz, who is already working as head of football at Bremen and has recently taken on more and more responsibility. “Clemens Fritz naturally plays a role in the considerations and is one of Frank’s successor candidates,” confirmed supervisory board boss Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald.
