FC Augsburg picked up three points in Bremen in Friday’s game at the start of the sixth matchday (09.09.22). Werder was at least equal for a long time, but FCA was a tad happier.
The goal of the day was scored by Ermedin Demirović (63′). In the first half, the team of referees led by Martin Petersen conceded a goal for Bremen from Niklas Füllkrug due to a narrow offside position, according to video evidence. A hand penalty in stoppage time caused a lot of excitement.
Researchers start score
The Fuggerstadt team made it clear very early on that they had big plans and, thanks to their aggressiveness and oppressive demeanour, got into the game much better. Right at the beginning Augsburg had two really good chances through Florian Niederlechner, which the 31-year-old couldn’t convert.
The SVW initially found it difficult to shift the action to the opposing half, but then found their way into the game better and better. After a good but unsuccessful chance for Marvin Ducksch, the ball suddenly wobbled in the Augsburg net after a free kick from the right side and a header from Niklas Füllkrug. However, the goal was withdrawn due to a passive offside position by Anthony Jung.
“Open visor” on both sides
In the second half of the game, the teams of Bremen coach Ole Werner and his Augsburg counterpart, Enrico Maassen, faced each other with open visors. Both teams acted with commitment and did not avoid duels or discussions. Referee Petersen had his hands full in this combative, not overly tough, but very hectic game, especially in the final phase.
After a good hour of play, Mergim served Berisha Demirović at the near post, who only had to put a foot around from three yards out. It was Berisha who almost made it 2-0 for the Swabians fifteen minutes before the end when he lobbed the ball over substitute goalkeeper Michael Zetterer and onto the crossbar. First-choice keeper Jiri Pavlenka had to give up his place in the first half due to a muscle injury.
“Handball” creates a lot of excitement
In the final quarter of an hour, Werder pushed for an equalizer, but Augsburg’s defense was confidently defended from all approaches out of the danger zone. In injury time, however, a handball by Maximilian Bauer resulted in a much-discussed penalty, which was saved by Rafal Gikiewicz. Bauer got the ball from close range on his slightly spread arm. The players and referee Petersen discussed for minutes, the VAR checked and decided on handball.
Duksch took responsibility for Werder again when the penalty was taken, but Gikiewicz suspected the goalkeeper’s right corner. Afterwards, however, there was a verbal skirmish between the Augsburg keeper and some Bremen fans, who threatened to storm the pitch. Fortunately it didn’t come to that. “That’s football. They insult me the whole second half, that’s my answer,” said the goalkeeper after the game at DAZN.
“We played a bad game for 90 minutes,” said Bremen’s captain Marco Friedl on DAZN, “at home we can’t get what we train in the week on the pitch. Now we’re empty-handed.”
Bremen in Leverkusen, Augsburg welcomes Bayern
Werder Bremen has to travel to Leverkusen on Matchday 7 (Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 3:30 p.m.). At the same time, the Augsburgers receive FC Bayern Munich.
