Deniz Undav is one of the discoveries of the season so far – and is increasingly becoming a candidate for the European Championship. Stuttgart’s coach doesn’t just praise the striker from a sporting perspective.

Coach Sebastian Hoeneß from VfB Stuttgart sees his goalscorer Deniz Undav is not only an enrichment for his own club, but for the entire Bundesliga.

The striker does “special things on the pitch” and also comes across as “really cool and positive,” said the coach before the Swabians’ away game at Darmstadt 98 on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky). “He is a brand – for VfB, but also in the Bundesliga. We can all be happy that he is with us.”

Undav at the home European Championships in the summer?

Undav is one of the discoveries of the season so far and a decisive factor in the success of VfB, which is surprisingly in third place in the table. After 21 competitive games for Stuttgart, the attacker already has 15 goals. “It turned out to be the right decision to take him on loan,” said Hoeneß about the 27-year-old, who came from English club Brighton & Hove Albion last summer.

Undav hopes to be nominated for the German national team’s upcoming international matches in March and possibly also for the home European Championships in the summer. The offensive man was born in Germany, his parents come from Turkey. Undav had already announced in December that he would choose the DFB team if he were nominated.

It is “impressive” how Undav deals with the current hype surrounding him, said VfB coach Hoeneß. “He was a bird from the start and is now still a bird in the best sense of the word,” said the coach with a smile about Undav, who also always has a casual saying up his sleeve. “I don’t see any danger of him starting to fly too much in any way.”
