Bundesliga 27th matchday – Sunday: Heidenheim ends VfB Stuttgart’s winning streak

SV Darmstadt – VfL Bochum 2:2 (0:1)

SV Darmstadt fought to a 2-2 (0-1) draw in the game against VfL Bochum – but still remains bottom of the Bundesliga. Coach Thomas Letsch’s team was unable to win for the 20th time in a row.

The game started with a supposed opening goal by Darmstadt’s Tim Skarke (3rd), which was disallowed due to an offside position. In the 16th minute, Bochum right-back Felix Passlack hit the side netting from close range, and teammate Philipp Hofmann took the lead in the 30th minute.

Three minutes after the restart, Hofmann (48th) scored again with a header to make it 2-0. Almost a quarter of an hour later, Skarke scored the next goal (62′). Oscar Velhelmson (76th) helped his team win the point. In a hectic final phase, VfL seemed close to making it 3-1, but Takuma Asano missed the great chance.

After the draw, Bochum is still six points ahead of relegation place 16. Newly promoted Darmstadt remains bottom of the table with 14 points.

VfB Stuttgart – 1. FC Heidenheim 3:3 (2:0)

VfB Stuttgart missed its next win in the Bundesliga in the game against 1. FC Heidenheim. National player Deniz Undav (90.+8) barely prevented his Stuttgart from defeat with his late equalizer to make it 3:3 (2:0). Heidenheim had previously turned the game around in the final phase. With the draw, Stuttgart moves within three points of second-placed FC Bayern Munich.

Serhou Guirassy (41′) and Angelo Stiller (53′) initially gave VfB a comfortable 2-0 lead. However, the Stuttgart team squandered this with an own goal from goalkeeper Alexander Nübel (62′). Substitute Silas only hit the post for VfB (74′) – then the game tipped over. Tim Kleindienst’s double goal in the 84th and 85th minutes put VfB behind before Undav equalized. Shortly before, Heidenheim’s Nikola Dovedan (90th + 6) had seen red.

For coach Sebastian Hoeneß’s team, the draw in front of 60,000 spectators was a sporting setback. With the long possible victory, the third-placed team could have shortened the gap to FC Bayern to one point.

FC Augsburg – 1. FC Cologne 1:1 (1:1)

The 1. FC Cologne missed an important victory in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga. In the game against FC Augsburg, Timo Schultz’s team couldn’t get past a 1:1 (1:1). This means that Cologne remains second to last in the table – one point behind FSV Mainz 05 in the relegation zone. After only one win in 13 Bundesliga games, Cologne needs a turnaround in order to at least stay in the league beyond the relegation place.

Augsburg’s Arne Maier (18th minute) initially gave his team the lead after a throw-in from Kevin Mbabu in the penalty area. Cologne’s Davie Selke equalized in the 33rd minute. By the end of the first half there were only two chances to score – both for Augsburg, both by Kristijan Jakić. But his header in the 35th minute and second attempt in stoppage time (45th + 3) were both unsuccessful.

In the second half, Augsburg repeatedly came into or into the Cologne penalty area. Substitute Dion Beljo was just centimeters away from making it 2-1, but Cologne’s Jan Uwe Thielmann cleared on the line (70th). Cologne also had chances, but Sargis Adamyan’s shot was blocked (63′) and the Augsburg team was able to intercept substitute Damion Downs while sprinting (73′). It would be shortly before the end FC Augsburg A shot from Vargas almost secured the victory (87th). It wasn’t enough for the Augsburg team to achieve the club record of five Bundesliga wins in a row – after winning four games, the winning streak ends.
