Bund Naturschutz shows vision of “Munich Central Park” – Munich

The Sonnenstraße was once a green boulevard along the former city wall. The Bund Naturschutz (BN) wants to make clear what that could look like today by making its vision of “Munich Central Park” tangible.

On Sunday, September 3rd, the BN offers tram rides from Sendlinger-Tor-Platz (Rondell) to Lenbachplatz and back. During the outward journey, the participants learn something about the history of the place and mobility in Munich from the audio guide. For the return trip, the BN provides tablets showing a flight through the park. The rides are free, last half an hour and take place between 4 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. Departure is every 30 minutes. There are 40 seats available per trip, registration is possible but not required by email at [email protected].

The BN presented its idea for the first time last year. It envisages relocating the tram tracks from the middle of the street to the sides and leaving only one lane for cars in each direction instead of up to five lanes as before. This would create space for wide footpaths and bike lanes in front of the houses. In the middle of the Sonnenstraße there would be space for hundreds of trees – and above all for people – over a width of around 30 meters. The BN explains that there is an urgent need for climate-resilient urban design. The central building blocks are trees that provide shade, which make staying in the heat bearable, as well as drainage areas to be able to absorb heavy rain.
