Scholz on budget agreement: Debt brake remains – climate-damaging subsidies will be reduced

After days of negotiations, the leaders of the traffic light coalition have reached an agreement on the federal budget for 2024. The first details should be known on Wednesday afternoon. A coalition committee is also planned for the afternoon. Almost four weeks after the Federal Constitutional Court’s ruling, there is a solution to the budget crisis that has put the traffic light government under great pressure. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) have since discussed how a 17 billion euro hole in the budget for the coming year can be plugged.
It was not initially known what solution the traffic light leaders came to. Among other things, the idea of suspending the debt brake for 2024 was discussed. The press statement from Scholz, Habeck and Lindner planned for 12 p.m. is eagerly awaited.

The Chancellor makes it clear: the debt brake will not be suspended for the 2024 budget. Instead, climate-damaging subsidies should be reduced. Support for Ukraine should be financed from the regular budget.

The Chancellor begins with, in his words, “the most important message”: “The government is sticking to its goals. We are sticking to the climate goals, strengthening social cohesion and we are standing close to Ukraine.” What is clear, however, is that you have to get by with significantly less money, said Scholz. But it’s also about savings and cuts. 17 billion euros are expected to be generated.
