The leaders of the traffic light coalition presented the most important points of their agreement to solve the budget crisis in Berlin.
The leaders of the traffic light coalition also want to cancel a planned billion-dollar subsidy for fees for the electricity network. The German Press Agency learned this from coalition circles.
The federal government also wants to reduce climate-damaging subsidies worth three billion euros. Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) said this in Berlin.
Scholz: Check exemption from debt brake
The traffic light government is examining an exception to the debt brake for further payments for people affected by the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley in 2021. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) announced this on Wednesday at a joint appearance with Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) to agree on the 2024 budget in the Chancellery in Berlin. The traffic light will approach the Union as the largest opposition faction and seek their support for this step.
Scholz added: “The affected citizens in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate should also be able to rely on the promises made.”
In general, the traffic light with the 2024 budget complies with the debt rule according to Article 115 of the Basic Law, said the Chancellor. However, the Basic Law expressly provides that the loan limits can be raised to cope with natural disasters and extraordinary emergency situations. The Ahrtal aid will involve an amount of 2.7 billion euros for next year, “for which we would like to provide for the decision to exceed the amount in accordance with the Basic Law. However, further in-depth examinations will necessarily be carried out for this.”
