Bruno Armirail new leader of the Giro, a first for a Frenchman since 1999

Between cases of Covid galore and deleterious weather conditions, this Tour of Italy 2023 is decidedly incredible. This Saturday, Nico Denz won the 14th stage between Sierre, Switzerland, and Cassano Magnago. The second victory of the German from Bora in this Giro, two days after the first, was confirmed at the photo finish, ahead of the Canadian Derek Gee (Israel PT). The Frenchman Bruno Armirail seizes the pink jersey, while he was in 23rd place the same morning, 18 minutes and 37 seconds behind the leader, the Welshman Geraint Thomas!

After, inevitably, a long wait, the good news has been made official for the Groupama-FDJ rider, reigning French champion in the time trial, who is competing in his first Tour of Italy at 29 years. The Pyrenean, native of Bagnères-de-Bigorre, becomes the 15th Tricolor to endorse the prestigious overcoat, the first since Laurent Jalabert in 1999.

It remains to be seen how far Armirail will be able to take his jersey, which he wears eight days before arriving in Rome on May 28.
