An 86-year-old man drove about 30 kilometers in the wrong direction on the Salzburg autobahn on Wednesday night. Although the police escorted him with flashing lights and told him to stop with loudspeaker announcements, the retired bus driver could not be stopped at first. Several other road users had to avoid the wrong-way driver, according to the police, there were several dangerous situations.
According to the Holzkirchen motorway police, the wrong-way driver was first noticed around 2 a.m. at the Weyarn junction. A patrol caught up with him shortly after the Holzkirchen service station and drove parallel to him on the road towards Munich. Because the 86-year-old was not deterred, the A 8, A 99 and A 995 in the direction of Salzburg were blocked by several strips so as not to endanger oncoming traffic.
The pensioner ignored the first barrier and avoided it, the police officers at the barrier were fortunately able to avoid the vehicle unharmed. The wrong-way driver couldn’t get past police cars that were standing further ahead, so he could be stopped two kilometers after the Munich-South motorway junction.
According to the police, the 86-year-old looked very confused and disoriented and could not provide any explanation for his behavior. His driver’s license was secured and the husband was handed over to his family. He is now awaiting criminal proceedings for endangering road traffic.
