Donna Leon: I never finished Moby Dick

“I don’t think books are sacred,” says Donna Leon. And that also applies to the best-selling author for classics.

The bestselling author Donna Leon (“Commissario Brunetti”) has no problem with not reading books. The 80-year-old author doesn’t think that if you don’t like it, you have to torture yourself to the end.

She herself has already put a classic aside, she told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). “I never finished “Moby-Dick”. And I don’t feel the need to finish “Moby-Dick” either.” The 1851 book by Herman Melville is about a captain’s hunt for a whale that had once badly injured him.

Leon also sees no problem in parting with books that have been read. “I don’t think books are sacred,” she said. It’s best to give them away.

Leon, an American with a Swiss passport, is the creator of the elegant and educated police inspector Brunetti, who hunts criminals in Venice. She releases a new volume every year.
