A brown bear has been sighted in Upper Bavaria for the first time in two years. The animal fell into a photo trap in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district.

It’s a blurry shot, but there’s no mistaking that the animal is a bear. A brown bear was discovered in Bavaria for the first time in two years.

As the Bavarian State Office for the Environment announced on Tuesday, the animal was photographed by a wildlife camera in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district last weekend.

There are no other recent sightings. The authorities, interest groups and representatives of livestock farmers have been informed.

Last brown bear sighted two years ago

According to the state office, young males sometimes roam very far in search of a female. The nearest brown bear population is around 120 kilometers from Bavaria in Trentino, Italy.

A brown bear was last detected in Bavaria in spring 2020, and there were several sightings in the winter months of 2019/2020. It is unclear whether it is the same animal.
