Britney Spears has regained her freedom after 13 years under tutelage. A judge in Los Angeles has lifted all guardianship requirements.

Pop singer Britney Spears (39) has regained her freedom after 13 years under tutelage. According to consistent media reports, a judge in Los Angeles lifted all guardianship requirements on Friday. “The guardianship of the person and property of Britney Spears is hereby terminated,” said Judge Brenda Penny. “That is the order of the court.” Penny had complied with a request from the singer’s lawyers. The 39-year-old musician will be able to make decisions about her private life, her career and her finances again.

Father’s guardianship lifted in September

At the end of September, the judge had already deposed Spears’ father as the singer’s guardian of hits such as “Baby One More Time” and “Toxic” and appointed a replacement. Jamie Spears (69) has been the guardian of his daughter since 2008 after the singer collapsed mentally due to personal and professional problems. This gave him control over her property in addition to managing her personal affairs. Most recently he was only responsible for financial matters.

At court hearings in June and July, the singer violently attacked her father in emotional speeches and accused her family and carers that they controlled their lives and enriched themselves with them. She was “traumatized” and “depressed”: “I just want my life back.” Critics accused the father of exploiting his daughter. Fans called for an end to guardianship under the motto “Free Britney”.
