He was one of the great British filmmakers. He worked with stars like Rachel Weisz and Cynthia Nixon. The “Sex and the City” star pays touching tribute to Terence Davies.
British filmmaker Terence Davies is dead. The screenwriter and director died at the age of 77, the PA news agency and other media reported, citing his management. Davies, for example, filmed the drama “A Quiet Passion – The Life of Emily Dickinson” with actress Cynthia Nixon, which was also shown at the Berlinale.
The US actress (“Sex and the City” star) paid tribute to Davies on Instagram on Sunday. She is sad about his death, but also grateful for all of his beautiful and always highly personal films. “Working with you was a highlight of my career and my life,” wrote Nixon.
Davies also directed The Deep Blue Sea with Rachel Weisz and the drama House Bellomont with Gillian Anderson. The film “Benediction” was released last year – the war drama with Jack Lowden told by the British poet Siegfried Sassoon.
The British Film Institute recognized Davies as one of the great British filmmakers. Davies was born in Liverpool, England, in 1945. With his film “Distant Voices – Still Life” he told of the working class environment.
The PA news agency quoted a statement from manager John Taylor on Saturday: “It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Terence Davies, who died peacefully at his home on Saturday 7 October 2023 after a short illness.”
