She combined punk with fashion and was known for her flashy outfits and provocative T-shirt messages: British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood died at the age of 81.

British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has died aged 81, her fashion house has announced. The cause of death was not initially mentioned.

“Vivienne Westwood passed away today, peacefully and with her family in Clapham, South London,” it said an Instagram post. “Vivenne kept doing the things she loved, right up to the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book and changing the world for the better.”

Westwood found success in the fashion world in the 1970s with her radical take on urban street style. She is considered a pioneer of punk in the fashion industry and was known for her crazy outfits.

Committed to environmental protection

She ran a boutique on London’s King’s Road with Malcolm McLaren, manager of the punk band Sex Pistols. She then built a global fashion brand that now has stores in the UK, France, Italy, America and Asia.

Her surname has been associated with style despite her changeable tastes. What Westwood would create next was never predictable. Her hair dyed orange became her trademark. Westwood later used her fame to campaign for environmental protection.
