At a height of almost 65 meters, the passengers on the roller coaster “The Big One” in Blackpool couldn’t go any further. When the wind was strong, they had to climb the stairs down.

“The Big One” bears its name for a good reason: the roller coaster in the amusement park “Blackpool Pleasure Beach” is the highest in the United Kingdom at 64.90 meters. When it opened in 1994, it was even the highest, fastest and steepest roller coaster in the world. A vehicle that makes you wish, as a passenger, that nothing could go wrong.

But that’s exactly what happened. During the ride to its highest point, the roller coaster had to stop unscheduled and couldn’t go any further. The reason was sudden winds that had arisen. So the passengers got stuck at a dizzying height. They had to get out of the cars and make their way down the steep emergency stairs. An adventure that was perhaps even more thrilling than the roller coaster ride.

Coaster passengers must use the emergency stairs

A visitor to the amusement park took a picture of the rescue operation from the ground up and praised the staff for their care: “The staff did a great job getting everyone downstairs.” According to his own statements, he had been on the roller coaster with the ride before. All passengers made it back to safe ground unharmed, and some even filmed the situation or took selfies.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach said the coaster was unable to continue due to “sudden changes in weather conditions.” Operations were suspended for the rest of the day.
