Brit Awards: Harry Styles clears – culture

Harry Styles is the big winner of the Brit Awards. In all four categories in which the British singer was nominated, he also won at the awards ceremony on Saturday evening in London: he was awarded as artist of the year as well as picking up Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop/R&B Act awards.

The price as artist of the year Styles dedicated to artists Rihanna, Charli XCX, and Florence Welch, who he said “were banned last year.” He is aware of his privilege. He was referring to a statement he made in his speech at the Grammys, where he won the most important category, Best Album, and then said it doesn’t happen often to “people like me”.

There was criticism on social media, for him as a white man whose gender identity corresponds to his physical identity, this is an extremely strange statement. Other Grammy nominees included Beyoncé, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige and Adele. Now Styles made it clear what he meant by that: He recalled that he used to be a member of the Boybond One Direction. He thanked her.

As of last year, the categories at the Brit Awards are no longer separated by gender. Those responsible responded to criticism from singer Sam Smith, who had identified as non-binary and complained that he could not be nominated in any category. On Saturday night, Smith was in the Song of the Year category with Kim Petras for the duet “Unholy.” Styles won there with “As It Was”.

The indie rock duo Wet Leg (“Chaise Longue”), which received the “Brits” for best band and best new artist, received as many nominations as Harry Styles, namely four. Beyoncé won awards for Best International Artist and International Song of the Year, “Break My Soul.” Alongside the Grammys awarded in Los Angeles, the Brit Awards are among the most important music prizes in the world.
