Brie, tomme and company… The best workers in France are launching a cheese advent calendar

What if the day started with a small piece of cheese? Some people don’t even ask themselves the question. Others could easily come by opening their Advent calendar next December. Yes, in the one launched by the Lhoro house, an institution in Strasbourg, it will only be about cheese specialties.

“But everyone can open it when they want, the important thing being to keep it cool,” laughs Cyrille Mohr, who contributed to the development of the object. Not the first of its kind, well almost. “Yes, it already existed, it can be found on the Internet, but not in this form. It was often boxes with pieces of cheese numbered according to the day. There, with us, it’s a real calendar in its traditional form, with boxes to open. »

It has roughly the size of an A3 sheet (42×32 cm) but with a thickness of 5 cm and above all a weight of 1.1 kg. “Each piece of cheese weighs around 50 grams”, estimates the employee of the Lhoro couple, both best workers in France (2007 and 2019). They are the ones who opted for a selection of 24 “French surprises”.

“The cheeses at the end will be perfectly preserved”

Which ones? Cyrille Mohr obviously does not want to say everything, but cites a few. “Fumster, a smoked munster, Tonka & Vermouth, a nine-month aged goat cheese with chocolate notes, a tomme de la Ligue, Brie de Melun, etc. What guided us was to offer a varied selection with a real tasting experience. And which can be preserved, too…

Tests have been carried out and certain cheeses, which are more sensitive, have thus been placed among the first boxes. “But those at the end will be perfectly preserved, all are wrapped in cheese paper, especially not vacuum-packed”, we still specify at Lhoro. For this first experience, the calendars are available for sale until November 25th. Directly in Strasbourg shops or on order, anywhere in France. “It will be delivered in insulated boxes. »

The price? 79.90 euros, for just over a kilo of cheese. “Given the quality inside, it’s completely consistent,” replies Cyrille Mohr. “And there’s even a surprise Christmas bauble to be found. Whoever gets it will win a three-month subscription for a gourmet box of cheeses for three months. “History to keep his good morning habits after Christmas.
