A group of women in Bremen held a protest against gender inequality in public swimming pools over the weekend.

A group of several dozen women gathered in Bremen on Saturday afternoon to demonstrate for more equality. The Hanseatic city still bans topless swimming for women. Members of the group stripped off the tops of their bathing suits to fight bare-chested to enjoy equal rights – as do all men – in the pool.

The group posted a tweet entitled “Feminist Strike Bremen” and provided it with some photos of the action. The reason for this is: “We are outraged! With our campaign ‘Free the nipple – equal upper body free in the swimming pool’ today in Horner Bad, we wanted to normalize that people of all genders can relax in the swimming pool – also upper body free.”

According to the Bremen police, the group left the swimming pool after a clarifying conversation

The activists’ bodies and signs carried slogans such as “My body against sexualized violence” or “Desexualize breasts,” as the Bremen police summarized in a statement on the campaign. The police were called because they did not want to leave the bathroom on Vorstrasse despite the request from the employees. After talking to the emergency services, the women packed up their things and left the premises.

According to their own statements, the Bremen police are now investigating all group members for “conducting an unregistered meeting”.

Other cities, such as Göttingen, are taking a different approach. There they found a solution to the topic of topless bathing: everyone is free to choose their swimwear, but only on Saturday and Sunday. According to the “Göttinger Tageblatt”, the weekend regulation should first be tested from May 1st to August 31st – in the “Badeparadies Eiswiese” and also in the three outdoor pools in the city.
