Breathe a sigh of relief in Iceland: No more lava leaks

As of: December 22, 2023 3:22 p.m

Contrary to fears, the volcanic eruption in Iceland apparently does not last for months. The crater has closed and no more lava comes to the surface. But the residents of Grindavik still have to be patient.

The volcanic fissure on Iceland has closed again faster than expected. Several scientists gave the all-clear in Reyjkavik today. Volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson said on Icelandic radio RUV that he believed the eruption was over.

The scientists flew over the area north of the coastal town of Grindavik several times and were able to see that the crater had closed again. Although embers can still be seen in the lava floor, no new lava is coming to the surface. The Icelandic Meteorological Institute has confirmed this assessment.

Residents still have to be patient

Yesterday, the residents of Grindavik, which is in the exclusion zone around the outbreak, were temporarily allowed to return to their houses and apartments. However, only between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

It is still unclear when they will finally be allowed back into their town. This will probably only be possible at the beginning of the new year. It is currently being investigated whether the eruption and the shaking of the earth caused further damage to the houses. The lava flow itself did not reach Grindavik.

Just a few days ago, lava was shooting out of the ground near Grindavik.

“The best Christmas gift”

Shortly after the eruption, experts expected activity to last significantly longer. There was even talk of several months. That’s why there’s a lot of relief now.

Volcanologist Thorvaldur Thórdarson said on Icelandic radio: “The fact that no more lava is emerging is the best Christmas present we could have wished for.”
