The fire hasn’t gone out yet. But the rain that fell on Saturday evening helped the fire brigade a little with the extinguishing work. What’s next?

The large-scale damage situation in the forest fire near Jüterbog south of Berlin that was declared on Friday has been lifted. The situation relaxed on Sunday, said Silvio Kahle, a spokesman for the Teltow-Fläming district operations center. On Friday, when the major damage situation was announced, the district took over the management of the operation. According to the spokesman, with the cancellation on Sunday afternoon, the operations management will go back to the city of Jüterbog.

The rain that fell on Saturday evening helped to ease the situation, especially in the northern area of the affected area. “The weather and the extinguishing measures had an effect,” said the spokesman on Sunday morning. On Sunday, two helicopters again supported the extinguishing work from the air. In the afternoon, the area was examined again, also with the help of a drone. According to the information, the entire affected area currently covers around 733 hectares. According to the operations management, there is no danger to surrounding towns.

There has been a fire in the munitions-loaded area since May 31. The fire brigade cannot get to the source of the fire directly because of the risk of explosion on the former military training area.
