Former world-class goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar suffered a brain hemorrhage on holiday and is in intensive care. His club Ajax Amsterdam, where he was on the board of directors for eleven years, wants to inform immediately if there are new developments.

Edwin van der Sar is in intensive care. The former world-class goalkeeper was the managing director and keeper of the Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam for a long time. The reason for the admission to the hospital is a cerebral hemorrhage. The club announced on Friday that his condition was stable. “Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We are thinking of you.” As soon as there is more concrete information, we will inform you further.

As the newspaper “De Telegraaf” reported, Van der Sar was hit by the brain hemorrhage while on vacation in Croatia on Friday. He was taken to a clinic by rescue helicopter from a Croatian island.

Edwin van der Sar resigned as Ajax CEO

After a disappointing season, Van der Sar resigned from his position as managing director on June 1st Ajax farewell. After almost eleven years in the management, he was empty, he wanted to calm down and distance himself, he said. “We’ve been through some really nice things, but it’s also been an incredibly difficult period.”

Ajax Amsterdam hadn’t won a title last season and only finished third in the domestic league. The 52-year-old Van der Sar had achieved numerous national and international successes as a keeper with Ajax and is therefore considered a club icon. He was also a goalkeeper for Manchester United and the Dutch national team.
