Update, May 21, 8 a.m. – Boy (11) from the Rosenheim district dies on a kayak trip

When the deployment report was received by the emergency services on Saturday late afternoon, they felt a jolt through the marrow and leg. An 11-year-old child capsized with the kayak on the Ammer, near the Echelsbacher Bridge and did not reappear. First search measures by the kayak group were unsuccessful. The control center triggered a major alarm. A rescue helicopter brought emergency services into the gorge using a cable winch. The area there is so impassable that only the helicopter could bring the helpers quickly to the scene. Water rescue services and mountain rescue services from the region came with a large contingent. Two fire brigades were also called in to search for the missing boy and close the bridge to traffic.

The first responders searched for the child in the raging Ammer, secured on ropes, they went into great danger. After more than half an hour, the lifeless body was located underwater. It was now clear that any help would come too late. The rescue turned out to be very difficult, said Herbert Kieweg, head of the Schongau police department in an interview.

The other people in the group were taken to a fire station and looked after by specialists. Next came a police helicopter, which flew officers into the ravine. They had to record the fatal accident on site and salvage the body together with the volunteers from the water rescue service and mountain rescue service. The last rescue workers were only able to end the operation around 9 p.m.

It was a group from the Rosenheim area who went on a kayak trip.

The press release in the wording:

On Saturday afternoon (May 20th), a group of 14 people from the district of Rosenheim was kayaking on the Ammer. Shortly after 3 p.m. the kayak of an 11-year-old boy capsized in a southerly direction in front of the Echelsbacher Bridge and the boy was then missing. One person from the group then immediately informed the integrated Oberland control center. Large-scale search measures were immediately initiated with numerous forces from the water rescue service and the mountain rescue service as well as forces from the Schongau police station.

At around 5:45 p.m., the boy was located and recovered. The search and rescue measures were extremely difficult due to the strong current and accordingly took a long time. After the 11-year-old had been rescued by the water rescue team, an emergency doctor could only determine death. The other five adults and eight young people or children were cared for on site by crisis intervention teams from the rescue services and the west support group of the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South. A police helicopter and a rescue helicopter were also deployed.

The investigations into the exact course of the accident were carried out on site by the permanent criminal service of the Weilheim Criminal Police Inspectorate under the direction of the Munich II public prosecutor’s office.
