First impression: I don’t see through. As if the author deliberately used linguistic and geographical smokescreens to confuse the reader a little. She tells of the bright light of Provence, van Gogh’s sunflowers, which are a promise of happiness for the future. Set against it a gray car factory in Oxford where Ellis works as a locksmith. This Ellis suspects that he will not be able to escape the dreary monotony for the rest of his life.
Second impression after 20 pages: the fog lifts, slowly a really good story develops. But how much of her can you reveal without spoiling the magic of this novel?
