BNB Beacon Chain to hard fork “ZhangHeng” soon, adding a feature that can ‘freeze’ the blockchain

BNB Beacon Chain to Add New Features to Upcoming Hard Forks This allows the blockchain to “stop” the production of new blocks if certain conditions are met.

indeclaration As of July 12, from BNB Chain, the “ZhangHeng” upgrade is expected to reach block height 328,088,888, which is expected to happen on July 19.

The hard fork features the Binance Evolution Proposal BEP-255, which attempts to use “on-chain asset reconciliation,” believing it can mitigate potential cross-chain bridge exploits such as channel attacks. Vulnerability from Binance Smart Chain on October 7, 2022

“Although some improvements have been made to improve cross-chain security, such as BEP171, the security of assets in the BNB Beacon Chain should also be guaranteed. Especially after the bridge exploit.”

Binance explains that changes to user balances are tracked on a block-to-block basis and will be reconciled to identify any issues and when they go wrong. Blockchain will stop creating new blocks.

The action will affect “downstream services such as bridges, exchange deposits and withdrawals,” but “radical action” is needed to protect the network and its users.

Bringing the blockchain back online will require a hard fork and reconciliation errors will be corrected.

“For example If a vulnerability is attacked Related accounts should be blacklisted. And when the blockchain resumes, downstream services can be recovered as well.”

Other changes include a bug fix to prevent “Rogue Key Attacks,” a security issue in which fraudsters create valid aggregate signatures for transactions. As opposed to the actual owner of the private keys, the upgrade fixes this by clearing all existing voting addresses. Validators will have to re-add the voting addresses later.

In addition to general security improvements, Upgrading will not have a direct impact on most users. As BNB holders or use of BNB supported Exchanges or Hardware Wallets are not required to take any action unless notified otherwise by their service provider.
