Mosul Eye established the figure of the citizen journalist as a voice from conflict zones. The historian is behind the pseudonym Omar Mohammed. He published a blog from June 2014, when “Islamic State” (IS) occupied his hometown of Mosul in northern Iraq. His reports and tweets were also a key source for international media during the more than nine-month battle that liberated the city from Iraqi government forces in 2017. Soon after the liberation, Mohammed revealed himself. He now teaches history and diplomacy at Sciences Po University in Paris.
