For three weeks, a family in Alaska feared for their beloved golden retriever. The blind dog, who is a bit older, escaped. It was only by chance that he was discovered by a construction crew.

It borders on a miracle: After three weeks, a blind, runaway golden retriever from the small town of Sitka, Alaska, is back with his family. She had already given up hope. After all, the bitch is no longer the youngest.

“She means everything to me,” owner Ted Kubacki is quoted as saying in the local newspaper “Daily Sitka Sentinel”. “I have five daughters aged 4 to 13 and they have spent every day of their lives with this dog.”

Blind golden retriever missing for weeks

Lulu, that’s the name of the family dog, ran away on June 18th. “She’s just so helpless and you can imagine she can’t get very far because she can’t see,” Kubacki said. For weeks, the family members searched desperately for the four-legged friend.

They had almost given up hope when a construction crew heard something rustling in the bushes next to a road not far from the family home. The animal, which was lying about 4.57 meters deep in an embankment, the workers initially thought was a bear. But on closer inspection, they realized it was a dog and took it out.

Though Lulu was alive, she was in bad shape. The dog, weighing around 36 kilograms, had lost ten kilograms since her disappearance. She was dehydrated, dirty and her fur was matted.

Residents donate to Lulu’s recovery

The father of the family describes the first meeting: “I just expected her to jump up, wag her tail and kiss my face, but she couldn’t even lift her head. She had been through a lot.”

Meanwhile, with the help of medical care, food, and rest, Lulu’s condition has improved significantly. Kubacki, who works in a grocery store and supports his family of seven on his own, was initially concerned about the vet bill.

Completely unfounded, as it later turned out, because Sitka residents donated hundreds of dollars to help cover the costs of Lulu’s recovery.
