“Blade Runner 2099” is the title of a series sequel to the cult film “Blade Runner”. Amazon has now officially ordered the show.

Science fiction fans can expect a promising new serial project. “Blade Runner 2099” is a mini-series for Amazon’s streaming service Prime Video, which follows on from the cult classic “Blade Runner” (1982) and the sequel “Blade Runner 2049” (2017). This reports “Variety”. An official start date, actors or directors are not yet known for the sci-fi series.

“Blade Runner 2099” with “provocative plot”

It is already certain that old master Ridley Scott (84) – as in “Blade Runner 2049” – is involved as an executive producer in the upcoming series project that has now been officially ordered. Showrunner will be Silka Luisa, who was previously responsible for the series “Shining Girls” with Elisabeth Moss (40) for the streaming service Apple TV +.

According to “IndieWire”, the new live-action series will have a total of ten episodes and will play 50 years after “Blade Runner 2049”.. Further details about the story are not yet known, but the production company Alcon Entertainment speaks in an official statement of a “provocative plot” that series maker Luisa developed. Amazon Studios emphasizes that the series sequel will “retain the intellect, themes and spirit of the previous films”.

1982’s “Blade Runner” defined the sci-fi genre

Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic Blade Runner “is considered one of the greatest and most influential science fiction films of all time,” said Amazon TV boss Vernon Sanders when the new series was announced. In the cyberpunk factory, the eponymous blade runners hunt down replicants after the artificial beings resist being shut down.

With “Blade Runner 2099”, the streaming service Amazon Prime Video is once again relying on a globally known and established brand that is being implemented as a series. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, a series adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s (1892-1973) popular stories from Middle-earth, was only released on September 2nd.
