Osiel Gouneo was the Paris Ballet’s first Black Romeo. With the star he talks about accusations of racism backstage – and explains why he still likes to dance the “Moor”.

He actually loved reggae. Osiel Gouneo grew up in the provincial town of Matanzas, Cuba. Today he is considered one of the best ballet dancers in the world. Gouneo has been engaged in Munich for seven years, as the first soloist in the Bavarian State Ballet. In his book “Black Romeo” he talks about his long journey to the biggest stages in the world. After an intensive rehearsal, he takes time for a conversation.

Mr. Gouneo, how was the rehearsal?
Good! But there is still a lot to learn – and the premiere is coming soon.

What role are you currently dancing?
You can’t say exactly, the piece is still being written. It is based on the choreographer’s life and the experiences of others. So it’s very free.
