After four long years, “Black Mirror” fans can look forward to season 6. What the sequel to the Netflix hit has to offer.

Since its launch in 2011, “Black Mirror” has been one of the most successful science fiction series ever. Season 5, the last season of the Netflix hit, was released in 2019. Further filming was delayed not only because of the corona pandemic, but also because of a legal dispute with the Endemol Shine Group, which had held the rights to the series to date.

Four long years later, fans of the series can now look forward to the long-awaited sixth season. The new episodes have been available on Netflix since Thursday, June 15 – and are causing discussions on the net less than 24 hours after the release.

“Black Mirror” tells of werewolves, crimes and catastrophes

Five episodes with a length of between 40 and 80 minutes tell – as usual – five self-contained stories, all of which take place in a different time. They are – typical for “Black Mirror” – futuristic, satirical and dark and all come from the pen of “Black Mirror” king Charlie Brooker, who was previously responsible for the screenplays. And yet viewers criticize that the new episodes of the anthology series no longer represent what “Black Mirror” stands for.

Because you won’t find science fiction in the episodes, the previously described negative effects of technology and media on society and people, for which the format stood, are almost completely absent. Instead, some actions take place in the past, sometimes telling of werewolves and crimes, of astronauts and earth-shattering catastrophes.

What is season 6 about?

In the first episode, titled “Joan Is Awful,” which is the closest thing to the “Black Mirror” character, a middle-class woman finds out that a streaming service called “Streamberry” is broadcasting a drama series about her own life with Hollywood star Salma Hayek in the leading role. Joining Hayek in the film adaptation, which was directed by Ally Pankiw, are Schitt’s Creek actress Annie Murphy, Shadow and Bones star Ben Barnes and Catastrophe actor Rob Delaney.

The other episodes then drift even more strongly. “Loch Henry” is about a young couple who travel to Scotland for a nature documentary, but unexpectedly stumble upon a shocking legend whose footsteps they follow. Directed by BBC star Sam Miller. Daniel Portman, John Hannah and Monica Dolan took on the lead roles.

“My favorite series has become the worst”

Another Hollywood star can be seen in Aaron Paul in “Beyond the Sea”. In it, John Crowley tells the story of two astronauts who find themselves in an alternate world of 1969 on a high-tech mission in space. Uncharacteristically, the episode takes place in an alternate past, just like the fifth episode entitled “Demon 79”, which takes place in northern England in 1979. Here, a sales clerk realizes she must kill three people to prevent a major catastrophe.

“Mazey Day” by Uta Briesewitz closes the circle of five episodes. The fourth episode is the shortest at 40 minutes and tells the story of a celebrity who is pursued by intrusive paparazzi after a hit-and-run accident. Ultimately, the story with Clara Rugaard, Danny Ramirez and Zazie Beetzals in the leading roles turns out to be an imaginative werewolf film adaptation that has nothing to do with the classic “Black Mirror” flair, but in its brevity it brings with it a whistle and excitement .

On social media, fans were disappointed with the new season. Taking to Instagram, one user commented, “I just watched ‘Joan is awful’ and it’s really ‘awful’. Second worst episode after Miley Cyrus. My favorite show has become my worst,” another says : “I just watched the first two episodes. What a shame. Netflix, what have you guys done with my favorite series.”

Series creators have announced changes

It was already foreseeable that the new season of “Black Mirror” would be different. Series creator Charlie Brooker announced far-reaching changes for the new episodes in April. He said: “Partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both myself and viewers, I’ve started this season by intentionally turning some of my own core assumptions on their head about what to expect asked.”

Whether Brooker’s change of direction is due to the crises of recent years and whether the director wants to avoid further future dystopias remains his secret. In any case, he splits minds with Season 6.

“Black Mirror” is now available to stream on “Netflix”.
