Black ice warning for Monday: face-to-face classes are canceled at many schools in Hesse | hessenschau.de

Meteorologists expect a significant risk of black ice on Hesse’s roads on Monday morning. Distance learning is to be offered at many schools. Some schools are even closed.

The fourth Sunday in Advent turned out to be a sunny winter day in many places. Thousands of pedestrians and skiers were there over the weekend in Hesse’s ski areas. “It’s well attended, but not yet overcrowded,” said the ski slope operator on the Wasserkuppe near Gersfeld (Fulda).

The coldest temperature was measured in Sontra (Werra-Meißner) on Sunday morning. It was -15.5 degrees there. “The low temperatures extended down to the Rhine,” says hr meteorologist Michael Köckritz. In Wiesbaden, for example, it was -10 degrees.

Delayed planes at Frankfurt Airport

A passenger plane is de-iced at the de-icing station at Frankfurt Airport.

Because of the winter weather, flight control allowed 37 aircraft to take off and land at Frankfurt Airport after 11 p.m. on Sunday night. Because of the cold weather, aircraft reportedly had to be repeatedly de-iced. Actually, there is a ban on night flights between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. at Germany’s largest airport.

“Those who can should stay at home”

In the coming hours, meteorologists expect rain to fall on frozen ground as temperatures rise. Rain is expected across the country from around midnight, says Köckritz. Temperatures are expected to drop to around freezing by morning. Freezing rain and black ice can be expected in the morning rush hour.

“Anyone who can should stay at home,” advises the hr meteorologist. You should generally plan more time and get up earlier. Restrictions and delays are to be expected in private transport, but also in buses and trains. These could drag on into the late afternoon.

Schools are doing distance learning

Against the background of the announced black ice situation, the districts of Lahn-Dill and Limburg-Weilburg suspended face-to-face classes in the schools on Monday. Where the schools can be reached without danger, emergency care will be provided, the districts said. Otherwise, the schools offer according to Message distance lessons.

The Werra-Meißner district left the schools to decide on possible distance learning for Monday. “We recommend that schools do without normal lessons in order to avoid possible hazards from black ice on the way to school,” explained District Administrator Nicole Rathgeber in a press release late Sunday afternoon.

The city and district of Gießen also lifted the obligation to be present at schools for Monday on Sunday evening. “Ie as far as possible, lessons can take place in the schools, they are not generally closed,” it said on the website giessen.de.

In other Hessian districts, lessons are canceled at individual schools due to the weather or there is also a switch from face-to-face to distance learning. There is an overview here.
