Already numerous school closures on Wednesday
On Wednesday, face-to-face teaching at schools was canceled in the entire administrative districts of Middle Franconia and Lower Franconia as well as numerous other cities and districts due to the winter weather. It was only in the morning that it was announced that there would be no afternoon classes at schools in Upper Franconia and that the schools should close at 1 p.m. due to the announced risk of black ice. Several district offices in Swabia said that if the route to school was too dangerous, the student could be excused.
For schools in Bavaria, the Ministry of Culture stipulates that in the event of weather-related restrictions on face-to-face teaching, distance learning should take place on site within the framework of the personnel and organizational capacities. The school management decides whether and from what period of time. Emergency care is sometimes guaranteed, but this is not mandatory for schools.
Warnings about black ice in Bavaria
The DWD had issued severe weather warnings for black ice for almost all of Bavaria on Wednesday. There is a high risk of slippery conditions due to freezing rain and ice formation, it said. Staying outdoors and traveling should be avoided, according to the statement.
The severe weather warnings are valid until Thursday morning in many places. BR weather expert Christian Lorenz explained on BR24live that the situation in Swabia and Upper Bavaria was slowly easing over the course of Wednesday due to milder air. In northern and eastern Bavaria, however, dangerous freezing rain and black ice can be expected until Thursday morning.
