Of course it fits in with the time, especially now in the stressful period just before the end of the year, that in this one crime scene are all so insanely exhausted. The commissioners slump, a student lies on the floor of the library, even a dog is exhausted from many smells. “Damian” is the name of the episode from SWR in which each of the overwhelmed characters longs for peace and no one finds peace. Especially not the student who runs into the lecture hall to take the repeat exam in the subject “Administrative Process and Administrative Process Law”, but the exam was on the plan three weeks ago and the lecturer is already discussing it.
Very early in this adventure, the audience learns that it will again be dealing with a different kind of crime thriller; the levels of time will shift, perception will be put to the test. The overexertion of the characters sets the tone, so to speak, the audience can also feel overwhelmed when they follow a story that is a riddle, with a punch line at the very end. A double murder, another corpse, a burning hut – how is that connected? Not all loose threads are linked here, the recent episode in Bremen with the remote topic of vampirism was more understandable.
As ambitious and sometimes overambitious as the story in “Damian” is (director: Stefan Schaller; script: Lars Hubrich), the pictures are so accurate and impress the actors. The overwhelmed, rushed, burned-out student Damian Rombach, played by Thomas Prenn, is a complete outsider. He has lost touch with everyone, his mother gives him a piece of cake that he likes to eat; a helpless and desperate attempt to save a relationship that has been shattered. Because Damian can no longer do anything with the food, he has long since strayed from the path and is becoming more and more desperate, and the voices in his head are whispering louder and louder. It is touching how the young Thomas Prenn plays this man who loses himself and spins hopelessly towards doom. And the band Boston is playing “More than a feeling” – a horror hit that you normally only hear on Bayern 3.
