The head of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), Holger Münch, warned of an increasing willingness to use violence by left-wing extremists after the attack on the power supply at the Tesla factory near Berlin.
Münch said the investigation was complex and that the attackers acted in a “very clandestine manner.” But it is clear: “The threat situation is changing: “We are increasingly seeing violent crimes. We are increasingly having outstanding individual crimes, and we also have perpetrators who are evading prosecution.” There is “an intensification of the threat situation from the left spectrum.”
Arson attacks by left-wing extremists are “not uncommon”. But the attack on the Tesla factory’s power supply had a new quality: such great damage had not yet been caused. He assumes that there will be an “incentive for imitators” – making a quick search success all the more important, said Münch.
In general, attacks on critical infrastructure cannot be completely prevented. However, it is important to increase the risks for the perpetrators. “Then we’ll have an easier time with the investigation.”
Tesla production shut down for almost a week
On March 5, unidentified people set fire to a power pole in a field that is part of the factory’s power supply. Production came to a standstill for almost a week. Many households also had no electricity.
The left-wing extremist “Vulkan Group” said it was responsible for the attack. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office took over the investigation on suspicion of membership in a terrorist organization. Münch said it was still unclear whether it was a closed group.
