Birgit Lutz on climate change – culture

The SZ author and expedition leader Birgit Lutz says her new book is intended to give encouragement about her “Obituary of the Arctic”. The subtitle is almost more important: “We can still save the world”. Lutz, who has been doing research in the far north for 15 years, takes her readers on a journey through the arctic island world of Spitsbergen and shows the effects of climate change. With the help of well-known scientists such as the climate impact researcher Stefan Rahmstorf or the heads of Arctic research stations, she classifies the local observations in global climate events, asks philosophers and psychologists why people find it so difficult to deal with major changes and deals intensively with the concept of freedom: Is it Freedom to drive 180 on the Autobahn – or is freedom something completely different? She traces the strategies of climate change deniers and piece by piece puts together a picture of global changes that is as comprehensive as it is exciting. A picture that frightens, informs and motivates in equal measure: Because it also clearly shows the possibilities and chances that we still have if we want to.
