Former US President Bill Clinton has been admitted to a California hospital with a urinary tract infection. The 75-year-old is already on the mend.

Former US President Bill Clinton has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in California with a urinary tract infection. The 75-year-old is already “on the mend, in good spirits and is incredibly grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff who treated him excellently,” wrote his spokesman Angel Urena on Thursday on Twitter. Clinton was taken to the University of California Irvine Medical Center on Tuesday. His attending doctors wrote, according to CNN, “We hope he can go home soon.”

Clinton was already being treated more often for health problems: in 2004 he had four-fold bypass surgery on his heart and in 2010 he had two stents inserted to open an artery. His doctors now emphasized that his hospital stay was not related to the heart or Covid-19. His spokesman confirmed this via Twitter.

Clinton in intensive care only for safety reasons

Clinton had been brought to the hospital’s intensive care unit for close monitoring and was given antibiotics and fluids, CNN quoted from a joint statement by Clinton’s family doctor Lisa Bardach and Alpesh Amin, a doctor at Irvine Medical Center. “After two days of treatment, the white blood cell count drops and he responds well to the antibiotics.” The urinary tract infection had spread in his bloodstream. Clinton is in intensive care for privacy and security reasons, not because he needs intensive care. He was already in good spirits, was talking to his family and staff and had already got up and left.

Urological infections are very common in the elderly and can be easily treated, it said. Clinton will be treated intravenously with antibiotics until Friday.

The former head of state was at a private event held by his foundation in California on Tuesday, CNN reported, citing his office. He felt tired and was then admitted to the hospital after being tested. The Democrat Clinton was US President from 1993 to 2001. He is married to Hillary Clinton, who was the Democratic candidate for the 2016 US presidential election and was defeated by Donald Trump at the time.
