The biathlete Franziska Preuß had not yet completed 200 meters of this race when it was already clear that other skis would glide faster through the snow that day. Preuß was the first in a group of four to start, one second ahead of the Italian Lisa Vitozzi and Hanna Öberg from Sweden, four seconds ahead of her sister Elvira Öberg.
