Better backlighting: Apple wants to increase MacBook battery life in 2024 models

The next generation of 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros will use a more energy-efficient Mini-LED backlight. It should require less energy to achieve the same brightness as current models.

Apple introduced mini LED displays in its Macbook Pro in 2021. These use thousands of LEDs for backlighting the LCD screen. According to the Digitimes report, which is based on information from suppliers, Apple wants to equip the next generation of notebooks with better mini-LEDs.

With the new mini-LEDs, the backlight is said to use less power, even while maintaining the maximum brightness of 1,200 nits. The battery life should increase by up to 10 percent, according to Digitimes.




When will the new Macbooks Pro be released?

The report mentions that test production of the new MacBook Pros will begin in the fourth quarter of 2023. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo assumes thatthat no new Macbook Pro models will come onto the market before 2024. According to him, the new devices will be equipped with Apple’s M3 chip.

OLED still years away for Macbooks

How 9to5Mac reports, the actually planned OLED displays for future Macbooks Pro are still a long way off. According to the blog, the first copies are not expected before 2026 or 2027. Apple has problems with burn-in effects when screen content remains unchanged for too long.
