Coalition talks after the Berlin election

Berlin SPD wants to continue exploring with the Left and Greens on Thursday
At their first exploratory meeting, the SPD, Greens and Left Party discussed the election result and possible changes in cooperation, according to Berlin’s Governing Mayor Giffey. The next meeting date has already been set.
At their first meeting on Tuesday, the three parties in the red-green-red government coalition in Berlin agreed on a second exploratory talk on Thursday.
This was announced by the governing mayor and SPD top candidate Franziska Giffey (SPD), Greens top candidate Bettina Jarasch and Left top candidate Klaus Lederer on Tuesday after their first meeting.
Giffey said they discussed the reasons for the election result and talked about what changes there needed to be in the collaboration. “It is clear to everyone that there must be changes,” said the SPD state chairman – both in terms of content and in dealing with each other if there should be further cooperation.
Lederer announced that the three parties wanted to get into the thematic discussion on Thursday and then take the necessary time for it.
Greens top candidate Jarasch said it was thoughtful talks – similar formulations were also used by Lederer and Giffey. “Today was a very serious, thoughtful, self-critical conversation,” Giffey said. Co-Chairman Raed Saleh added that the three parties had long, intensive, honest and tough discussions with each other.
Jarasch said that the time had been taken, based on the mood in the city, to very thoroughly develop a common understanding of where the coalition now stands and what needs to be done to govern even better together.
Left state chairwoman Katina Schubert defended the exploratory talks about continuing the previous coalition, although all three parties have lost support: “Red-Green-Red is the combination with by far the largest majority in parliament”. In this respect, it is completely legitimate to say which constellation has the largest majority and can work. Of course it is just as legitimate if there is a smaller majority.
Second meeting between the CDU and the Greens on Wednesday
The election winner, the CDU, was initially closed invited to exploratory talks with the SPD and the Greens, which began on Friday. On Monday there was a second meeting between the CDU and SPD exploratory teams. Those involved want to find out in the talks whether they see a sufficient basis for starting coalition negotiations.
The second exploratory meeting between the CDU and the Greens is scheduled for Wednesday. The CDU and SPD will meet for the third time on Friday.
All parties are looking forward to next Monday with excitement. Then state returning officer Stephan Bröchler wants to announce the official final result. So far, the SPD has landed only a hair’s breadth ahead of the Greens, with both parties receiving 18.4 percent. It is conceivable that the order could change due to the recounts in the past few days. The coalition question would then arise again under certain circumstances.
