On Sunday evening, Stefan Evers, General Secretary of the Berlin CDU, sent a rather symbolic image via social media. It shows white smoke emanating from this plain stovepipe on the roof of the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. The message was intended to signal the successful conclusion of negotiations between the CDU and SPD; this Monday the parties presented their completed coalition agreement to the press. A comparison with the papal election – of course, that could only be meant ironically. At least at first glance.
