When the Berlin watchmaker Franz Ludwig Löbner was given a letter from the Royal Prussian Artillery Examination Commission at the end of April 1897, Löbner became very excited, albeit joyful. A lucrative contract for the German Army was within reach. Löbner nervously unfolds the two double-sided sheets of paper.
