Pure research: This Wednesday, July 5, the ten bells in the north and south towers of Munich Cathedral will ring in succession for several minutes between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A current sound image is created by them. With the acoustic and optical measurements, employees of the European Competence Center for Bells “ECC-Pro-Bell” determine a kind of musical fingerprint of the sound body. The facility, which is based at the Kempten University of Applied Sciences, researches how bells, as cultural assets, can be sustainably protected from damage and how their ringing behavior can be improved.
