The “Belgorod” was handed over to the Navy. It is to be used in the Pacific. In the event of a nuclear war, it would be Russia’s last weapon. Your Poseidon torpedoes can create a huge radioactive tsunami wave.

The largest submarine in the world begins service in the Navy. When moderators on Russian state TV joke that Putin could have the English island sunk in the sea, they allude to a submarine: The “Belgorod” has a larger water displacement than a battleship of the First World War. It measures 184 meters in length. But the “Belgorod” – Project 09852 – is not just big. She also has other duties. One of them is that it can transport the Poseidon torpedoes. The EurAsian Times reported that the boat would serve in the Pacific Fleet.

The “Belgorod” was originally supposed to be built as an Oscar II class submarine, but then Moscow ran out of money in 1994 and the unfinished shell lay dormant. Until it was decided to convert the hull into a special submarine. For this purpose, the hull was lengthened by 30 meters to 184 meters. The ship’s displacement is now 30,000 tons underwater. The speed is 33 knots. The boat is powered by two OK-650 V reactors with an output of 100,000 hp.

underwater dock

It will not carry strategic nuclear missiles, the entire launcher section has been removed. Together with the lengthening of the hull, the former starter segment forms a kind of underwater dock, as known from James Bond films. The Belgorod was built to carry other submarines and deploy them unnoticed. These can be Losharik-class mini-submarines. They can work at extreme depths with their robotic arms. With them, their own buoys are placed at depth to monitor shipping traffic. Conversely, corresponding installations in the USA could also be tracked down. The West fears it could cut the Internet’s underwater cables. A “cut through” is unlikely, but the boats could place “sleeping” explosive charges near the cables.

In the future, the “Belgorod” could deploy underwater drones. These drones are still in their infancy but are set to transform naval warfare. Drones like the Russian Klavesin-2R could lurk on the sea floor like a mine for a very long time and, in the event of war, attack the enemy’s capital ships as a suicide submarine. “The ‘Belgorod’ opens up new opportunities for Russia to conduct various studies and enables various scientific expeditions and rescue operations in the most remote areas of the world’s oceans,” said Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Admiral Nikolai Evmenov.

Novel nuclear torpedoes

The greatest danger comes from the Poseidon-type torpedo weapons – one of Putin’s silver bullets. The Belgorod can carry six 2M39 Status-6 or “Poseidon” torpedoes. These torpedoes are now operational. In terms of size, they are more of a small unmanned submarine. They can independently cross entire seas at high speeds. The torpedo is over 20 meters long and about two meters in diameter. It should dive to over 1000 meters and be able to change direction and depth during its journey. With nuclear propulsion, its range is said to be practically unlimited. Above all, however, the underwater speed of the weapon should be over 110 knots, which would be 200 km/h. To make that possible, the Russians must have solved the problems of supercavitation for Poseidon’s comparatively large body. Supercavitation means that the torpedo is surrounded by a protective envelope of air. This dramatically reduces the friction between it and the surrounding water. Each torpedo is to carry a two-megaton thermonuclear warhead. With an underwater explosion, such a weapon could wipe out an entire US carrier group in one fell swoop.

weapon after the nuclear war

The real meaning of “Belgorod” and Poseidon is that of a doomsday weapon, a weapon created for the end of the world. What do you mean with that? It is a third-strike weapon used after a nuclear exchange. Even if the major cities of Russia were consumed by nuclear fire, the “Belgorod” would still be operational and would launch its torpedoes. These should then set course for the coasts of the opponents. There off the coast, the explosions of the atomic bombs would cause a tremor like a severe earthquake and a tsunami would occur. A huge radioactive wave would flood the coastal regions deep into the hinterland. Putin once said what would the world need if Russia no longer existed. And that was no joke.
