MagentaTV is bringing Béla Réthy back from retirement for the European Football Championship – albeit in a slightly different role than usual.

Declared after the World Cup in Qatar in winter 2022 Béla Réthy (67) is resigning as a TV commentator – after over 30 years at the microphone. But the retirement doesn’t last long: MagentaTV is bringing the cult reporter back for the home European Championships. The TV and streaming provider announced this in a press release. MagentaTV will launch the first of three planned channels for the European Championship on April 15, 2024. “Fussball.TV 1” is intended to get you in the mood for the European Championship, which begins on June 14, 2024 in Munich.

Béla Réthy puts old European Championship games to new music

In preparation for the tournament, “Fussball.TV 1” shows old games from German European Championship history. These include, for example, the victorious finals in Rome in 1980 and in Wembley Stadium in 1996. These games are shown in full, but with a new commentary. In addition to Wolf Fuss (47), Béla Réthy is also used. So the man with the distinctive voice comes relatively close to his usual job as a reporter.

MagentaTV uses Béla Réthy in a second format. The Viennese native with Hungarian roots will comment on highlights and anecdotes from the history of the European Championship alongside other reporters in “Euro Moments”.

The “Analytics Lab” will do without Réthy. Moderator Jan Henkel (50) will analyze the European Championship teams with Bundesliga-tested coach Manuel Baum (44) as experts. MagentaTV is the only provider to broadcast all 51 European Championship games live. It is not yet known whether Béla Réthy will return to his old job as a live commentator.

By the way, Béla Réthy hasn’t been completely away from the TV window since he resigned as a reporter. He was the speaker for the documentary series “All or Nothing: The National Team in Qatar” on Amazon Prime or stopped by as a guest in the “current sport studio” of his old home channel ZDF.
