“Being able to read comics is a skill”: Interview with comic researcher – Culture

Since studies have shown that one in four children in Germany cannot read after primary school, reading promotion has become a big topic again. One hope lies in children’s comics – appropriately, bookstores distribute them on May 11th, the annual Free Comic Book Day, free editions of 21 comics, from superhero adventures to indie stories. Felix Giesa, research associate at the Institute for Youth Literature Research at the University of Frankfurt and responsible for the comic archive there, talks about an art form between complexity and accessibility.
