Beiersdorf, BASF and Henkel: How sustainable is our palm oil really? – Business

Palm oil is found in almost half of all supermarket products. The German companies promise their consumers that it comes from environmentally friendly production. But at least for Beiersdorf, rainforest was cut down for the raw material.

The rainforest is home to the Dayak Agabag indigenous community in the Indonesian northeast of the island of Borneo. There they hunt pigs, hornbills and deer. The women look for cassava leaves to sell. The Dayak Agabag grow vegetables and bananas and other fruits in the clearings. This rhythm of the rainforest has determined the lives of the indigenous people here for generations. Now this rhythm is out of sync.
