A few days before the midterm elections, US President Biden made an urgent appeal to his compatriots: You must save democracy with your vote. The reason for the crisis is his predecessor.

Most polls shortly before the so-called midterms see US President Joe Biden and his Democrats on the defensive – and the opposition Republicans at an advantage. Most respondents named the economic situation as the number one issue, especially high inflation.

Now the President has tried to regain the initiative. Bidens warned that next Tuesday’s midterm elections are about nothing less than preserving democracy:

In a normal year, we are not faced with the question of whether the vote we cast preserves or endangers democracy. But this year we are.

Trump supporters cling to alleged voter fraud

Biden deliberately delivered his speech not far from the Capitol in Washington, where on January 6, 2021, supporters of ex-President Donald Trump violently tried to prevent the results of the previous presidential election from being recognized. Trump and numerous candidates he supports continue to claim that the 2020 election was “stolen”. There is no evidence of the alleged electoral fraud.

“America’s democracy is in jeopardy because a past President of the United States refuses to recognize the outcome of the 2020 election,” Biden said. “He refuses to acknowledge the fact that he lost.”

Set an example with a vote

The President also referred to the attack on the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. A 42-year-old man severely injured 82-year-old Paul Pelosi in the head with a hammer at the couple’s home in San Francisco. According to the police, the act was politically motivated and should actually apply to Nancy Pelosi.

And Biden referred to reports in the US media that self-appointed election observers, some of whom were armed, were trying to intimidate postal voters when posting their ballot envelopes. “We must stand up with an overwhelming voice against political violence and voter intimidation. Period. Stand up and stand up against it,” Biden demanded.

An emotional election campaign final sprint is announced. Both Biden and Trump have more appearances planned for the coming days.
